      Taupe evening dress

Taupe sits between grey and brown, with a hint of pink depending on the light. A colour that is hard to name and easy to wear — probably the most underrated of the ceremony shades.

      Why choose taupe?

It offers the neutrality of beige with more depth, and the restraint of grey without the coolness. On fair skin it avoids the washed-out effect a beige close to your complexion can create. On darker skin it sets a soft contrast without ever looking harsh.

It is also a year-round colour: warm enough for autumn, muted enough for a daytime summer wedding.

      Our taupe cuts

In satin, taupe picks up champagne reflections under artificial light, which makes it read as more formal than it appears in store. In matte chiffon it stays understated and suits religious ceremonies. Available in sizes 36 to 44, up to 48 on some styles.

Our taupe selection is deliberately small: we only take on models where the shade is genuinely right, as this colour is very sensitive to variations in dyeing.

      Wear it with

Gold or champagne jewellery to bring out the warm reflections, silver if you would rather pull the shade towards grey. Nude, camel or taupe courts. Avoid black, which overwhelms the nuance and makes it look dull.

      Taupe, beige or brown?

Beige is lighter and brighter, brown deeper and warmer. Taupe sits between the two, on a grey base. Our two other neutral collections are considerably larger if you want more choice.
